In 1948 I embarrassed my Aberdonian mother by being born in the Loveday Street Maternity Hospital at Birmingham. After a less than lacklustre academic career, which further disappointed my mother, I worked for a multinational chemical company. To add insult to injury I then took a drop in salary and now work at the Hunterian Museum.
