Alastair Dinsmor served in the City of Glasgow Police and subsequently Strathclyde Police between 1968 and 1998, attaining the rank of Inspector. Following retirement from the force in 1998, he founded the Glasgow Police Heritage Society, a Scottish Charity, aimed at researching, preserving and promoting the history of the UK's first police force, The City of Glasgow Police (1800-1975). Between 2000 and 2002 he lead the project to establish a museum in Glasgow dedicated to the old force. The Glasgow Police Museum was opened on 3 May 2002 and has since welcomed over 8000 Glaswegians and visitors from across the World.
