Murray Pittock is Professor of Scottish and Romantic Literature at the University of Manchester, and was formerly Professor of Literature at Strathclyde and the founding Director of the Glasgow-Strathclyde School of Scottish Studies. His most recent works include a two-volume edition of James Hogg's Jacobite Relics and A New History of Scotland (Sutton); he has written the entries on Charles Edward Stuart and the majority of the Jacobite leadership in 1745 for the new DNB.
