Born in Glasgow in 1924, he graduated in History at St Andrews University in 1950, retiring in 1984 as Senior History Lecturer at Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow. Transport, especially tramways, has been a life-long interest (he has experienced them in five continents) and publications include historical accounts of tramways in Glasgow and Ayr where he has lived for the past 50 years.
