Peter L Payne was the first Colquhoun Lecturer in Business History at the University of Glasgow (1959-69) and Professor of Economic History at the University of Aberdeen (1969-95). He has written widely on the development of the Scottish Economy but is perhaps best known for his studies on British entrepreneurship and the rise of the large scale firm. Since 1990 he has edited the journal, <i>Northern Scotland</i>.
