Soap Box Derby, 1955

Boy Scouts' Soap Box Derby, photographed by Alf Daniel in 1955.

Two Scouts are at the start line about to put their home-built cars to the test in front of a large audience. The Soap Box Derby (officially known as the National Scoutcar Races since 1962) is an annual event in the Scouting calendar. Boy Scouts from all over the United Kingdom build their own pedal-driven go-karts to enter in the races.

In 1955 Partick Camera Club set out to create a photographic survey of Glasgow. As the project progressed, other camera clubs joined and each was allocated a district of the city to photograph. Glasgow Museums exhibited the photographs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and at the People's Place, and in 1956 the exhibition was shown at the Palace of Art in Bellahouston Park. The photographs are now part of Glasgow Museums' collections.
