Robert Lyne

A portrait of Robert Lyne by Duncan Brown.

Lyne was appointed an elementary master at the Glasgow Government School of Art in October 1856. He taught freehand drawing of ornament, geometry and perspective at the School of Art and also in Normal Seminaries and parish schools in the city, all for a salary of £80. He asked for a pay rise in 1858 but was turned down, and he left the School in 1861.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s. He worked as a janitor at the School of Art from 1845 to 1862.
