Glasgow Advancing was a civic exhibition mounted by Glasgow Corporation at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in 1944. The exhibition showcased the wide range of services provided by the Corporation, and the stand for the Municipal Transport Department is shown here.
The display model demonstrated the Corporation's vision of road transport in the city after the war. There were proposals to adopt an American-style tram system with single deck cars which would operate underground in the city centre, reducing traffic congestion. There were also plans to provide better bus, underground and tram connections to ensure a smoother journeys for passengers.
The Corporation also mooted plans to offer helicopter facilities at some bus stations to allow passengers to make short journeys by air and anticipated the further development of Prestwick Airport for long haul flights.
