Advertisement for Stewart & Westwood, outfitters, in Glasgow University Magazine 5 November 1913.

Before the introduction of the National Health Service, people falling ill had to pay for the services of a general practitioner. Stewart & Westwood promoted their winter coats as a form of insurance policy with the slogan "Prevention is better than cure". By protecting their wearers from cold weather, it was implied, the coat also helped prevent the ailments that could arise from exposure to the elements, and the cost of calling on a doctor for medical treatment.
