Stirling was a tobacco merchant in partnership with his brother Walter. He was a Glasgow bailie in 1716 and 1724 (he was one of those arrested with the Provost after the Shawfield Riot of 1725), and Provost 1728-1730. He was the father of William Stirling (1717-1777) who established the printing firm of William Stirling & Sons, and uncle to Walter Stirling, the founder of Stirling's Library.
