Cartha Athletic Club was founded in 1889 and divided into two sections, winter and summer. Football was the mainstay of the winter section and indeed it was the only winter sport until the introduction of hockey in 1902-1903. As professionalism increased during the late 19th century football became less popular at the club, although there was a resurgence in interest before the First World War.
