Shettleston Harriers

Members of Shettleston Harriers, pictured in Killin Street in 1937 on a run to promote a keep fit campaign. On the left is Jim Flockhart, Scottish National Cross Country champion at the time and who represented Scotland on eleven occasions between 1933 and 1949.

Shettleston Harriers was formed in 1904 at a meeting of cross-country running enthusiasts. The first clubhouse was a converted shop in Gartocher Road. Expansion into other areas of track and field athletics between the wars brought increased membership. After the Second World War, the club moved to new facilities at Barrachnie and continued to prosper.

The club has been at the forefront of Scottish athletics for most of its history, with club members regularly winning medals at home and abroad and representing both Scotland and Great Britain. Athletes who became famous in Shettleston colours include Dunky Wright, Allan Scally, Lachie Stewart, Nat Muir, Joe McGhee and Cameron Sharp.
