Empire Exhibition

This aerial view of the Empire Exhibition of 1938 provides a perspective from which all the principal buildings and the main avenues can be seen in relation to each other. The White City Stadium is in the background.

The Empire Exhibition was the last great gathering in peacetime at which the many countries of the British Empire were represented. The Empire began to disintegrate after the Second World War, 1939-1945.

The Exhibition was intended to provide a showcase for the products and resources of the Empire. The United Kingdom and Scotland were to have their own areas in which to promote themselves. Vaguer aims about promoting friendship and the cause of peace were also expressed, at a time of high international tension.
