A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of Sir John Maxwell, 8th Bart of Pollok (1791-1865). The painting was by James R Swinton.
Sir John Maxwell was Member of Parliament for Renfrewshire 1818-1830 and for Lanarkshire from 1832 to 1837. He was responsible for repairing Haggs Castle in 1860 in order to convert it into a residence for his estate factor. The building had been neglected following the Maxwell family's move to Pollok House in 1752.
