Advertisement for the Cosmo Cinema in Glasgow University Magazine, March 1946. In this advertisement the films showing include The Vanishing Virginian, intended as a showcase for MGM’s roster of new young talent, and The Seventh Veil, the biggest British box-office success of 1946.

The Cosmo (the name is derived from "cosmopolitan") was one of the first purpose-built art house film theatres dedicated to showing films from around the world that might not be shown in more "commercial" cinemas. Opened in 1939 and renamed the Glasgow Film Theatre in 1974, it is also an educational charity aiming to encourage public participation in film through screenings of new and archive films. GFT Education presents educational screenings, workshops, courses, events and outreach activities for schools, colleges, community groups, and special interest groups. It gives advice on using film in school and college courses, and on arranging film-making projects.

In recent years the building and its interior have been extensively refurbished.
