Blythswood House, photographed by Thomas Annan in 1870. The house stood on the former Ranfield (or Renfield) estate, west of Braehead, nestled at the junction of the River Cart and the River Clyde. In 1654 it was purchased by Glasgow's Lord Provost Colin Campbell (who later purchased the Blythswood estate in Glasgow) and remained in the hands of the Campbells of Blythswood for generations.
The house in the photograph was designed by James Gillespie Graham and erected in 1821 by Archibald Campbell, MP for the Glasgow District of Burghs, to replace the earlier mansion known as Ranfield (or Renfield) House. It was demolished in 1935.
