Sir Hugh Fraser

Sir Hugh Fraser (1936-1987) with daughter Patricia on her horse Blue Moon, at the City of Glasgow Horse Show and Country Fair '82 in Bellahouston Park. Patricia rode Blue Moon to victory in the Sir Hugh Celebration Stakes, a race sponsored by her father. The photograph appeared in the July/August 1982 issue of Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin.

Sir Hugh succeeded his father, Lord Fraser of Allander, as head of the House of Fraser Group on the death of the latter in 1966. The company continued to expand its empire of department stores, with over fifty joining the group during the 1970s. Sir Hugh relinquished the chairmanship in 1981 and in March 1985 House of Fraser was purchased by the Al Fayed family in a £615 million deal. Sir Hugh died in 1987.

Sir Hugh was a keen supporter of equestrian sports, and the Hugh Fraser Foundation contributed towards establishing the Weipers Centre for Equine Welfare at the University of Glasgow. The Hugh Fraser Foundation, set up by Sir Hugh in 1960, gives grants to charities and deserving causes.
