John Page Hopps (1834-1911) was a Unitarian Church minister and member of the Glasgow School Board.
Hopps was born in London. He attended a Baptist college in Leicester and held pastorships in England before coming to Glasgow as minister of the Unitarian Church in Bath Street. In 1873 he was elected to the Glasgow School Board. He was a steadfast advocate of secular state-aided education and an ideological foe of a fellow Board member, the Orange activist Harry Alfred Long.
Away from the world of local politics, Hopps was best known for writing the children’s hymn, “Father, lead me day by day.” He returned to England in 1876.
