John F. McCaffrey was a Senior Research Fellow at Glasgow University until his untimely death in July 2002. He had previously been a Senior Lecturer in Scottish History at the University, and also served as head of the Scottish History Department. His research interests were varied, focusing on politics, religion and culture during the nineteenth century. In particular, he published widely on the Irish experience in Scotland. His book Scotland in the Nineteenth Century (1998) was widely praised for being a clear, concise and accessible introduction to a period of profound social change.
